Norfolk Southern Railway
Petersburg, VA – Johnson Road Overpass – Amtrak Passenger Project
The Crouch team was tasked with designing a highway overpass over the Norfolk Southern Railway main line at Johnson Road in Petersburg, VA, in conjunction with the Norfolk Southern Railway – VDRPT – Amtrak Passenger Project. In order to expedite the construction, reduce impacts to the Norfolk Southern Railway operations, allow for the new main line roadbed and track construction, while maintaining access to the adjacent golf course, and, to the adjacent public high school, the Crouch team recommended and designed concept and final plans for a bridge replacement off-line from the existing highway bridge. The bridge was also designed for more track capacity underneath the highway bridge.
The Crouch Team worked with Norfolk Southern Railway and the City of Petersburg to accept the proposed plan, saving construction time on the main line roadbed and tracks underneath, and reducing impacts to traffic flow over the bridge, while maintaining public relations with the City. The proposed highway alignment change was approved and accepted by Norfolk Southern Railway and the City of Petersburg.
