Petersburg, VA – New Main Line Tracks and Bypass of Autoramp - Amtrak
The original track concept design for the bypass around the Petersburg Autoramp necessitated the extension of an existing 10’ wide concrete arch drainage structure, and the subsequent impacts to approximately 1.5 acres of wetland. During the project design phase, the Crouch team recommended a revision to the existing track layout, creating a new ladder to the east of the existing Autoramp yard ladder, allowing the two new main line tracks to be constructed without extending the concrete arch culvert and without significantly impacting the wetlands around the culvert. The yard tracks were extended slightly to the west, not affecting the yard capacity.
The project schedule was improved by almost one year due to a reduction in permitting time, and a reduction in construction time since the arch did not have to be extended. The proposed track changes were approved and accepted by NSR operations and engineering.
